College of San Mateo (CSM) is part of the San Mateo County Community College District and is a Hispanic Serving Institution and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institution. The college enrolls approximately 15,000 students each academic year. CSM has a diverse student population that is a reflection of the communities that it serves. The Position:

The Dean of Language Arts is responsible to the Vice President of Instruction for administration of the division, including the disciplines of English and Literature, English as a Second Language, Film Studies, Modern Languages (American Sign Language, Mandarin Chinese, Spanish), and Communication Studies.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties below are representative of the duties of the classification and are not intended to cover all of the duties performed by the incumbent(s) of any particular position. 1. Provide leadership, management, and development for the instructional programs in the Division
2. Address issues that arise within the Division relating to personnel, facilities, equipment, curriculum, team building, and scheduling
3. Work closely with faculty to support a strong teaching and learning experience for students and faculty which includes development of curriculum and application of up-to-date methods of instruction, including computer-assisted instruction and distance learning
4. Guide and support faculty in their efforts to develop and assess student learning outcomes at course, program, and institutional level
5. Coordinate preparation of catalog, schedule, and brochure materials for the Division
6. Plan and administer the Division budget
7. Direct the tenure review and evaluation processes for all Division faculty and staff
8. Collaborate actively and cooperatively with other administrators to address College-wide concerns
9. Write grant proposals, manage Division grants, and prepare required reports
10. Serve on designated College and District committees
11. Manage the Division Office and other services to assist faculty and students
12. Collaborate with other College divisions and services, advisory committees, student groups, and appropriate off-campus institutions and groups
13. Establish and maintain mutually beneficial ties with industry, local high schools, and the local community
14. Participate in implementation of staff development programs for Division faculty and staff
15. Administer collective bargaining agreements for Division faculty and classified staff
16. Perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Instruction

Minimum Qualifications:

• Possession of a Masters degree or above from an accredited institution OR the equivalent
• One year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrative assignment
• Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff

Physical Requirements:

This classification requires data comparison, analysis and interpretation; conceptualization; oral communication with small and large groups; persuasive communication; negotiation; confrontation; conflict resolution; coordinating work performed by others; tact, sensitivity, patience; flexibility and adaptability; good memory; attention to details; and prioritization skills in order to perform the essential functions.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

1. Successful college teaching experience in a discipline that is taught in the Division and/or a demonstrated appreciation for the disciplines taught in the Division.
2. Evidence of involvement, initiative, and leadership in instructional activities.
3. Ability to develop, organize, and coordinate diverse instructional programs to achieve College and Division goals.
4. Ability to elicit and bring focus to recommendations from faculty and staff to effectively represent the Division goals at College and District levels.
5. Ability to recognize and encourage innovative and equity-centered practices.
6. Organizational skills to facilitate the development and administration of curriculum, student learning outcomes, program review, budget, staff development, and performance evaluation.
7. Ability to manage the Division office and effectively work with faculty and staff.
8. Ability to facilitate problem solving between departments and programs in the Division.
9. Awareness of and commitment to the goals of shared governance.
10. Demonstrated ability to write grant proposals, manage Division grants, and prepare required reports.
11. Evidence of organizational skills, including prioritization and delegation.
12. Commitment to support, develop, and implement instructional programs and academic support centers.
13. Demonstrated understanding of supporting and facilitating online teaching and use of learning technologies appropriate to the subject area(s) of the Division.
14. Experience in or willingness to support, develop, implement and assess outcomes of programs that lead to the success of all students, including underrepresented groups.
15. Knowledge of accreditation standards and their implementation.
16. Experience in articulating curriculum and programs with both university and high school faculty.
17. Demonstrated ability to form and maintain community and industry partnerships.
18. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff and administration to plan and implement facilities modifications.
19. Skill in respectful, tactful and sensitive interaction with people who are diverse in their academic, socioeconomic, ethnic, neurodivergent, and LGBTQIA+ backgrounds.

Benefits include paid holidays, vacation and sick leave. The District pays all or a portion of monthly medical plan premiums (depending on the coverage) and pays all of the monthly dental and vision plan premiums for employees and eligible dependents. Academic employees participate in the State Teachers Retirement System, a defined-benefit retirement plan through the State of California (no contributions to Social Security). Foreign Education completed outside of the United States must be deemed equivalent to that gained in conventional/accredited U.S. education programs in order for it to be considered for the satisfaction of minimum qualifications. Foreign transcripts must be translated and evaluated by a U.S.-based credentials evaluation service. The District currently accepts evaluations from agencies approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.
